What is "white hat" vs. "black hat" optimization?

"White hat" optmization is done using methods that are considered acceptable. Some of these are having the correct keywords in meta and alt tags, title attributes, sitemaps, inbound links and content relevant to your site.

"Black hat" optmization is using methods such as cloaking, where you give the bots one set of your page, while a person visiting your site is given a different page. Hidden text, which cannot be seen on your pages, but is visible to the search engine robots, is another big no-no. Using these methods can cause a website to get black-listed by the search engines. We at LeapUPthepage.com will always practice only "White hat" methods of optmization for our clients.

Are there some things that could hurt my placement?

There are some things that could harm your placement in the search engine rankings. Some of these are:

  1. Make sure your site is not entirely flash driven. This tends to send the bots off to find an easier site to spider.
  2. Avoid having frames. This also makes it difficult for the bots to spider your site.
  3. Do not use hidden text. This is text the same color as your background, or just a shade lighter, making it almost impossible to be read. This will get you turned away by the search engines.
  4. Do not use cloaking. This is where the content presented to the search engine spider is different from that presented to the users' browser.
  5. Do not have duplicate websites. Only one will be listed with the search engines, unless each website is unique.
